Colonel Daniel L. Simpson is the Commander of the 659th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Group, Fort Meade, Maryland. He is responsible for leading over 1,000 Total Force Airmen in two geographically separated squadrons, three detachments, and nine mission aligned Air National Guard squadrons. He directs focused and timely cyberspace ISR operations and digital network exploitation analysis in support of 24th Air Force, U.S. Cyber Command, and National Security Agency missions.
Colonel Simpson enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1986, starting his military career as combat communications specialist. In 1988, he was selected to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy, graduating in 1992. After finishing intelligence technical training in 1993, his squadron-level operation assignments were with F-15E, F-16CJ, and special operations units. He has served as a Weapons Officer at both the tactical and operational levels, and instructed at the United States Air Force Weapons School. At the strategic level, he assisted in national command decisions as the Military Aide to the Vice President of the United States. He has commanded at the squadron and group levels. Colonel Simpson has multiple deployments for Operations Southern Watch, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom.
