Rotarians appreciate “Service above self”. This year invite a Veteran to Veterans Day One on One and share your appreciation of the Service above Self that he or she has given to our country.
This year, we are honored to introduce Vice Admiral Al Harms as our keynote speaker this year. Mr Al Harms is a native of Central Illinois, completing his undergraduate degree here at the University of Illinois and later earning his MS degree in Statistics from Texas A&M University. Commissioned through the Naval ROTC Program, he completed flight training and ultimately, the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School which led to his command of Attack Squadron Seventy Five (VA-75). Following completion of the Naval Nuclear Power Training Program Mr Harms served as the Executive Officer of USS Enterprise (CVN-65) leading to the command of both the USS Shreveport (LPD-12) and the USS Nimitz (CVN-68), the lead ship of America’s largest class of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. Since his promotion to Flag (General Officer) rank in 1996, he has served as
- Deputy Director of Operations, U.S. Central Command
- Commander, Carrier Group Three and Carl Vinson Battle Group
- Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff, U.S. Pacific Fleet
- Director, Assessment Division (N81) on the CNO’s staff
- Commander, Naval Education and Training Command
His final active duty assignment before transitioning out of active duty was to serve as the Navy’s Chief Learning Officer where his responsibilities included the education and training of all Navy officer and enlisted personnel. Mr. Harms is currently living in Central Florida with his wife, four children and eight grandchildren and has served as the University of Central Florida Vice President for Strategy, Marketing, Communications and Admissions, and as their Special Assistant to the President.
